John M asked:
I am doing a project on the promotional products industry .I have contacted some people in the industry but I would like to have more insights from a larger number of people. For people who work in the industry could you tell me the pros and cons of the industry? Do you think that the industry is saturated? What are the chances of a new supplier and a new distributor to succeed in the industry? What is the standar profit margin of a supplier and of a distributor? Please, replies will be extremely appreciated. Iwould like to have insight from a large group of professional in the industry.

I worked for a distributer for about 9 years. To me, the pros are building relationships with many different people, seeing results from promotional marketing (ROI), thinking outside of the box for new promotions, financial compensation can be good if you land the right prospect. The cons…working hard on a project and losing the bid, constantly searching for the best pricing available from suppliers, and working with tough deadlines. I think the industry would be more saturated in larger major cities, but not in smaller towns overall. I don’t know the standard profit margin for a supplier, but I believe the distributors run anywhere from 25% up to 40% profit. I’d think the average is around 32%. I recently left the company and started on my own. Within 3 months I was able to cover my expenses. Fortunately, I had alot of warm sales leads to start with. Hope this helps.
